Hey there, I'm Jack and I run the show here at Jack's Software House. It's nice to meet you :)
I work with sole traders and small businesses around the Scarborough, York & Sheffield area who are looking to get the ball rolling on their side hustles and startup empires.
I've been designing and building software since 2018, and been a professional in the field since 2021. With relevant qualifications and experience in the wild, you can be sure I'm more than just some ambitious hobbyist!

Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question? No worries, I've got you covered. If you can't find the answer to your query, feel free to send me an email!
I'm outside of your service area, or from another country. Can I still work with you?
Of course! The service area exists to give you an idea of where I'm based, and where I'm most likely to be able to meet you in person. If you're outside of this area, I'm still more than happy to work with you, but we'll have to do everything remotely. I'm also happy to work with clients from other countries, but please be aware that I only speak English, and there may be additional admin required to go ahead with your project!
I'm a sole trader that's just starting out. Can you help me?
Absolutely! I love working with sole traders and individuals to help them get their feet off the ground. I can help you with everything from registering your domain name to building your website and hosting it - think of me as your own technical advisor!
Can I contact you by phone?
Unfortunately, I'm very often unable to answer the phone, so this is not a reliable way to get in touch with me. Because of this, I don't publish my phone number online. If you'd like to speak to me, please send me an email and we can arrange a time to speak. Clients may be given my phone number for emergency contact purposes should they need it.
How do I book a consultation with you?
Simple! Send me an email at [email protected] and we can discuss a time and date for a meeting. Depending on my current workload and availability, there may be a waiting list - I'll make it clear that this is the case when we first speak. Should you wish to go forward with a consultation, the meeting will be help on Discord or Google Meet - you'll have the option to choose.
What happens after my consultation?
After your consultation, I'll write up a document known as the Project Proposal which will outline the work we discussed and serves as a reference point for what work will be carried out. You'll have the opportunity to review and approve the proposal, this ensures that both of us are clear on what you are hiring me to do. Once approved, a formal quote will be sent to you by email - this will include a breakdown of the cost of the deposit, any interim payments, and the final payment due upon completion. The quote is valid for 30 days, and once you've approved, you will be invoiced for the deposit. After you've paid that, I'll begin working on your project!
I want to hire you for a large project, does the process change?
In short: yes. The nature of larger, longer projects means that there's a greater risk to me of clients cancelling part way through. To protect myself from this, I will require a larger deposit than usual, and will require interim payments to be made at certain milestones. The exact amount of the deposit and the interim payments will be outlined in the Project Proposal and the quote. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask!
What happens if I cancel my project part way through?
That depends on your reason for cancelling. If you cancel because you've changed your mind, or you've decided to go with another developer, you are not entitled to a refund of either your deposit or any interim payments, and may be billed at a rate of £25/hour for any work already carried out but not covered by either the deposit or interim payments. If you've cancelled because of any extenuating or personal circumstances, I may issue a full or partial refund at my sole discretion. You can read more about cancellations in the contract I'll send you before any payments are made or any work begins.
Are there any contracts I'll need to sign?
In order to protect both you and myself, you will need to sign a contract before I can begin any work (including domain/hosting management). Most of the contract is boring legal jargon that only exists to make things clearer to the courts should a claim be made. However, if you are unhappy with any particular clause, you'll have the opportunity to negotiate this with me. You can read more about the contracts we use here.
Do I have to pay a recurring fee for hosting and domain management?
Yes. Unfortunately, both the server company and domain registrar require a monthly or annual fee from me to keep your website online. The exact pricing of these depends on both your expected traffic and the domain name you choose (this is, unfortunately, out of my control). I'll make it clear the exact pricing of these before you commit to anything. This will also include a small service fee for my time, to keep everything under one easy-to-understand price.
Can I pay for hosting and domain management monthly/annually?
Hosting is charged monthly, while domain management is charged annually. This is due to the nature of how hosting companies and domain registrars charge customers. You will need to pay the cost of the billing cycle upfront, and I will then manage the domain/hosting for you for the duration of the billing cycle.
